A commercial storefront door is a type of aluminum entrance swing door with a large visible glass lite. Storefront doors are always used as entrance doors into a commercial building. As a type of commercial door, storefront doors are exterior doors designed to swing out away from the building. Storefront doors are the most common commercial door type for retail stores, department stores, offices, and other commercial businesses.
The most notable difference between a storefront door and a hollow metal or wood commercial door is the large glass lite. Although glass lites are available in hollow metal or wood doors, they are much smaller than the glass lites that come standard in commercial storefront doors. The large glass lite in the storefront door allows natural sunlight in the commercial building, as well as gives customers clear visibility into the store making it inviting and also letting customers know what they can expect before entering.
Commercial storefront doors look great, and are economically priced. In comparison to hollow metal doors or commercial wood doors, which could cost thousands of dollars, commercial storefront doors are much less and provide security, building code compliance, and accessibility required for commercial retail stores and businesses.
A mortise lock is a type of commercial door lock that is installed inside of a pocket within the door. Mortise locks are known to be very heavy duty since, the lock body is protected by the door itself, making break ins more difficult. Commercial storefront doors come standard with a mortise lock, known as the dead lock. This heavy duty lock features a thick 5 ply laminated steel bolt and hardened roller pin providing strength and maximum security to the overall door system. In comparison to hollow metal doors or wood doors which traditionally use a standard lever handle and spring loaded latchbolt. The spring loaded latchbolt is notorious for compromised security, since it can simply be depressed by forced entry to gain access. With the laminated steel bolt, forced entry against the lock is much more difficult.
If the storefront door is in an area of high abuse or break ins mortise cylinder guards can be added to the exterior lock cylinder, to prevent vandals from compromising the lock cylinder. The storefront cylinder guards are designed from hardened steel.
Additional door armor like security cart bars can be installed on storefront entrance doors, to prevent vandals from gaining entry into the building if the glass is broken.
Storefront doors are comprise of a large lite of glass. The glass is held in the storefront door by glass stops. The glass stops are metal extrusions with a rubber gasket, that compress against the glass, holding it into place. Standard storefront doors have 1/4 inch glass stops, meaning the storefront door can accept glass that is 1/4 inch thick. Some storefront doors feature 5/8 inch glass stops, allowing it to accept 5/8" thick insulated glass.
Tempered clear glass is the glass type you see in the majority of storefront doors. The glass is clear, allowing great visibility through the door. Tempered glass is also very safe, since if broken, the glass breaks into very small pieces, reducing the chance of injury.
Low E or low emissivity glass is a type of glass that has many energy efficient characteristics making it a great choice for storefront doors. With any glass light passes through the glass. With Low E glass it reflects the part of the light that transmits heat. This allows better energy efficiency for your building as well as reducing any condensation.
Tinted glass or privacy glass is sometimes installed on storefront doors. This type of glass is manufactured with special colored pigments allowing it to reduce the amount of light transmitted through the glass. One drawback is this type of glass does heat up, since the light is not transmitted, the glass absorbs solar energy.
Insulated glass is used on many commercial storefront doors. Insulated glass is when two glass panes are separated by a spacer and filled with air. This creates an insulated air space, helping the glass insulate more efficiently. Storefront doors are available with 5/8 inch insulated glass. Which means the glass is constructed from two 1/4 inch panes of glass with a 1/8 inch air gap.
For extra security, specialized security glass can be installed into the commercial door so long as the thickness of the material is less than the specified glass stop size.
Commercial storefront doors use a top and bottom pivot hinge to swing the door out away from the building. The pivot hinge is manufactured from A380 diecast aluminum alloy and case hardened. A full race bearing provides a smooth door swing opened or closed. Up to 1/8 inch vertical adjustment can be achieved on the bottom pivot.
Commercial storefront doors are outswing exterior entrance doors. Traditional storefront doors feature a convenient offset pull handle on the exterior door side, and a horizontal push bar on the interior door side located 36 inches above the ground. The pull handles and push bar are constructed from 1 inch diameter solid round aluminum extrusion making it extremely durable even in the most abusive environments.
Commercial storefront doors are available in all standard architectural and construction sizes. All storefront doors are 1-3/4 inch thick.
